Dwarf Nova CV 1 in the Dense Globular Cluster

چکیده
Despite decades-old predictions of the expected presence of dozens of cataclysmic variables in the cores of globular clusters, the number of irrefutable, out-bursting candidates is still barely a handful. Using multi-wavelength, multiepoch HST images we have produced outburst and quiescence light curves for the recently discovered large amplitude variable CV1 in the core of the post corecollapse globular cluster M15. The light curves and blue colors show that the object is a bona fide dwarf nova, with absolute magnitude at maximum light rivaling that of the most luminous known dwarf novae. NGC 6397 is the closest globular cluster, and hence the ideal place to search for faint stellar populations such as cataclysmic variables (CVs). HST and Chandra observers have identified nine certain and likely CVs in this nearby cluster, including several magnetic CV candidates. We have combined our recent UV imagery with archival HST images of NGC 6397 to search for new CV candidates and espe...
متن کاملFaint Cataclysmic Variables in Quiescence: Globular Cluster and Field Surveys
Current evolutionary models imply that most Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) have Porb < 2 hours and are Dwarf Nova (DN) systems that are quiescent most of the time. Observations of nearby quiescent DN find that the UV spectrum is dominated by the hot white dwarf (WD), indicating that it provides a significant fraction of the optical light in addition to the quiescent disk and main sequence companio...

متن کاملFormation and evolution of compact binaries with an accreting white dwarf in globular clusters
The population of compact binaries in dense stellar systems is affected strongly by frequent dynamical interactions between stars and their interplay with the stellar evolution. In this contribution, we consider these effects on binaries with a white dwarf accretor, in particular cataclysmic variables and AM CVns. We examine which processes can successfully lead to the creation of such X-ray bi...

We have used the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) to study faint UV stars in the core of the nearby globular cluster NGC 6397. We confirm the presence of a 4th cataclysmic variable (CV) in NGC 6397 (hereafter CV 4), and we use the photometry of Cool et al. (1998) to present evidence that CVs 1–4 all have faint disks and probably low accretion rates. By combin...
